The leaves are falling from the trees, it is getting colder and wetter outside. So we put on a warm scarf before we go outside. This way we can’t catch a cold and we don’t get the flu or cold. At least we think so. Because that scarf is a large source full of bacteria that can make us sick and cold.
Humid and warm
Often you wrap the warm scarf high around your mouth so that you can keep yourself warm. As a result, you breathe against the scarf and in cold weather it will also become a bit damp from the air that you blow past it. We also sometimes sneeze and cough with our scarf on. Or think of that drop of snot that comes loose during a cold bike ride. That drop that is neatly (or not unnoticed) collected by your scarf.
Hotbed for bacteria
In this way, this nice warm scarf quickly becomes a wonderfully warm nest for the bacteria to fully multiply. So the idea that a scarf protects against a cold or flu does not hold. The scarf ensures that the nose is located between the (possibly sickening) bacteria.
To wash….? Oh yeah…
Also keep in mind that a scarf is generally only washed once in a while. It is often simply forgotten. Like the coat, the scarf hangs on the coat rack and rarely disappears into the laundry basket for a good wash. Often the scarf is only washed when it is visibly dirty, then people only think about it. What also does not help is that a scarf often cannot be used with the regular wash, but must be washed by hand. We no longer do that every day.
So regular washing is important!
Wash your scarf in lukewarm soapy water with a neutral soap. If necessary, use baby shampoo, which also seems to work well and is gentle on the fabric. Leave it on for 10 minutes and then rinse gently. Do not rinse under a hard running tap, this can make the fabric less beautiful. After (well) rinsing, squeeze out the water (do not wring) and hang the scarf unfolded nicely to dry.
Alternate more often
Do you have a low resistance and do you not want to catch a cold or flu? Then it is recommended to wash your scarf weekly. This of course also offers a good excuse to have a few more different scarves in the range. Which is generally not a problem for women.
We are curious; are you going to wash your scarf right now?
